Saguaro |
| Saguaro Cactus:
wiki
- symbol of Arizona; native to Sonoran Desert
Saguaro
cactus can live for more than 150 years.
It takes 50 years to grow to a height of 7ft, but it may take 75 years to grow a side arm.
They are mostly found in
Sonoran Desert
of Arizona, Mexico and California.
Saguaros
in drier western Arizona grow only half as fast as those around Tucson, Arizona
The roots are only 3 inches deep and can absorb 200 gallons of water per rainfall -- enough to survive a year. Side-arms are useful for reproduction (more flowers). Saguaro flowers open up at night, are pollinated by bats feeding on the nectar. By late morning the white flowers close. Saguaro flowers are the last flowers to bloom, and signify end of spring. |
