Color Portraits require color and composition for success, in addition to
emotions displayed by a person.
Faces change several times a second, heads turn, lips move, eyes squint and open, show curiousity or boredom, shyness or zest for life.
And if (as a photographer) you don't take that photo when things are almost perfect, there might not be a second chance,
all the elements will change and your
idea will go undocumented... until your next, perhaps better idea.
|
 |
|
Black and White portraits can sometimes show so much more than color...
When color photos look good, Black & White photos can look better, great, awesome. It is a different
"feel" for the viewer, and when trying to take photos which will be Black and White, the "feel" of the photographer will be different than
when targetting color photos.

The first rays of daylight touch Havasu Falls at 6:30 in the morning, in this photo framed by Cottonwood trees.
Out of the 4 major waterfalls with a name (Havasu Falls, Mooney falls, Navajo Falls, Beaver Falls), this is the one
with most variety for photos, as well as "good sun position in the morning".
Havasu Falls are 120 ft (37 meters) high.

3:30pm til 5am, 7am out... AAA tow truck couldn't get close enough to tow... rescued by Trigger after 2 hours.

Fremont Pass, Colorado ........... Jan 2005
On a clear evening I was returning from Leadville from photographing old shacks -
Leadville. This was only some 15 miles
after passing through town.
I had this view straight ahead of me. The 20 F weather felt colder due to the wind,
as I set up tripod by the road. With engine still running I took several photos.
This was only about 200 yards from where the Landrover got stuck. In December
I helped out folks who tried to make a U-turn through a snowy ditch,
only 200 yards off paved road. After an hour playing in the snow at 10,500ft (shoveling)
I pulled them out with my
Jeep.

Crested Butte, Colorado ........... Oct 2004
Getting up 6am was worth it, when I saw all the fog around (
Crested Butte
).
Later in the day, however, I arrived at this beautiful setting.
It took me 5 years to come to Crested Butte since first hearing
of its golden colors of fall.
My next trip, during November Thanksgiving was very special too, when
3ft of snow fell during 16hours. |

Snowmass, Colorado ........... Sept 1999
In Sept 1999 i was in Colorado for the first time, and stayed a week. Up and down
and through for 2 weeks... yet most of it was by Independence Pass.
Many sunny days and some light snow days too.
For some time i believed this was a picture from near Independence
Pass, but this is actually a view from Snowmass, next to Aspen. |

near Flagstaff, Arizona ........... Dec 2003
The 6x12ft trailer really was too big for my jeep. U-haul folks insisted, but i knew better.
Good thing that the first fishtailing happened on flat road. In 75mph i used both lanes before regaining control.
The second fishtailing was scarier and on a downhill. This time i used the shoulders in addition to the two lanes. I was lucky to
come out without damage. The 900mile moving trip lasted 2 days from Phoenix to Denver.

One of several great spots on our 1 week trip in Arizona/Utah, part of

I was up before 5am this time. |

The first snow of the season was amazing.
Snow, snow everywhere... Cars spinning tires, sliding over curbs... people rushing to Tire places to put on new/winter tires
The day before we flew in a 4 seater Cessna at 4pm (pilot friend was practicing landings/takeoffs), but when we landed 2 hours later,
the cold front has moved in and eventually led to a snowstorm. |

Temagami, Ontario........... August 1997
This was a first trip to Temagami for both me and Peter. The first night
there we saw a beautiful sunset ,
and we woke up to a beautiful morning on Rabbit Lake.
It was the persistent squirrel who woke us up. She tried to bite through the plastic bag tied
to a tree, to get to the muffins. We tied food to a tree as a bear precaution. |

Lake Powell, Utah ........... August 2001
That shallow spot that scraped the boat away from shore was nothing. But
when someone floored the jeep, while pulling the boat with its rudder down...
that was bad news. All 100 yards of it.
And parking the boat uphill in reverse half hour later overheated jeep's
crankshaft sensor, and it didn't start for 2 days... motels full, lift to
campground (driver got a speeding ticket)... wake up in desert with no shelter...
tow truck lift 140miles, jeep on top, we in it........ hey, that sounds
like a story to write. |

Lake Powell, Utah ........... August 1999
Near the border with Arizona. All the nice spots are accessible by boat
only. There are many canyons and dead ends. Rainbow Bridge is 50miles from
the campground. But camping is possible anywhere along the lake.
We rented a 21 ft motorboat for 2 days. After a campfire on land, we slept
on the boat, in a canyon. An anchor was in, and we had a rope going to a
cooler on shore, 15ft away. |

Utah, close to the border with Arizona......................
June 2002
Driving to Colorado for a weekend trip sometimes means sleeping in the car
on Friday night.
The targeted 4pm or sooner departure never happens, and the 800miles take
12hours.
Breaking not even half-way this time allowed us to see this beautiful Utah
scenery in the morning.

780miles seemed much longer on the way home from a weekend in Aspen, Colorado.

Sedona, Arizona ............ August 2000
West Fork Trail - the "cool weather" area of Sedona .... trees

Clouds were forming during the day, and eventually it rained on this hot
August day -- for real.
The blue color is a result of an accident..... but it does look better this
way. |

The road from Aspen to Independence pass .................
October 2000.
The time was running out for fall colors and a 4-day weekend trip to 800miles
distant Aspen didn't sound like a bad idea. The leaves were yellow close
to Aspen..... this picture is from over 10,000ft, a little high for leaves.
It was so nice, I had to return the following (regular) weekend. After 3
nights in my own bed. :-) |

It was another August sunset in Superstitions (30 miles east

12,095ft Independence Pass, Colorado ................... Oct
2000
The night was coming to Independence Pass. 40F, and dropping.
Phoenix-boy-me, in my 2 jackets, gloves and winter-hat, i was taking pictures,
when i saw the coolest sheriff deputy dude. He was just in his T-shirt........
he had that aura..... that aura of coolness.
Hailing back from New York city, he surfs the Pitkin County, Colorado these
days.....
The other dude's convertible car broke down, and night was coming. (if you
were wondering) |
